ROTHSCHILD
REPORT NO.18
The
range of industries operating within Australia is increasing all the
time, but more than half of the Australian sharemarket is concentrated
around only five different industries. Similarly, 10 companies represent
over 50% of the Australian sharemarket.
Investing
internationally means that Australians can access industries and leading
companies not available in Australia. This could mean better returns
for local investors over the long term.
Why should
you invest in international shares?
- Superior
growth opportunities.
- The products
and services you use every day have often originated from overseas
countries.
- A number
of growth industries including technology, telecommunications and
health care are not well represented within Australia.
- Diversification
across countries and industries gives you the opportunity for better
performance. This added diversification could also help you protect
your investment against a fall in any one market (including Australia).
The combination
of all these factors has resulted in significant growth in international
markets over time.
It is difficult
to determine what the best performing investment will be from year
to year. However, having a mix of investments (shares, fixed interest,
cash, etc) should mean that the returns investors receive are not
reliant on one investment market performing well every year.
The same
principle applies if you invest in only one sharemarket. Spreading
investments across a range of countries and industries means investors
have more opportunity to build their wealth. It also means investors
can protect their investment against a fall in one particular market.
The combined
effect of the world's best companies and dynamic growing industries
has meant that world sharemarkets have performed better than the Australian
sharemarket over time.
Rothschild
has formed an alliance with one of the world's top fund managers,
Boston-based Putnam Investments Inc., giving Australian investors
access to Putnam's international shares expertise.
Putnam Investments
Inc. is one of the world's largest fund managers with over $A770 billion
funds under management. It has almost 300 investment professionals

track record across a range of funds. In the five years to 30 October
2000, Putnam's Global Core Equity Fund returned 33.25%*, outperforming
the MSCI World Index by 9.33% per annum.
