Job Descriptions Are Negative ...
Job descriptions have a negative effect in motivating subordinates. Giving someone a written job description tends to demean him or her. When you describe in clumsy prose what they regard as an exciting job, it takes all the fun out of it. The chance raising of an eye or shrug of a shoulder when writing out a job description can convey the wrong impression. It gives the impression that you attach very little importance to something the person might regard as critical.
Result: Enthusiasm for the job will begin to sag. Poor performers tend to hide behind a job description. You can walk through a company and almost smell that is has job descriptions because it's quiet and there is absolutely no chaos, no action.
