Adopt these three rules for your switchboard. Put through:

  • Any employee who calls from anywhere and says "I want to speak to the boss."
  • Any customer with a complaint, who wants to speak to the top man.
  • Any reporter or analyst from a responsible radio or TV station.

This last rule is an important one. Too often the chief executive sets up a group called public relations. All this does is destroy his relations with the public. Anyone who is devoted to protecting the chief executive is also probably protecting him from doing his job right.
