Dismissing Employees - Best Practice ...
There is no easy way to tell employees they are “not what the company wants”. But the following guidelines may help make the best of a difficult situation.
- Do it quickly. Don’t discuss the matter with the employee. Don’t elaborate on shortcomings.
- Be precise and clear. Don’t allow your personal discomfort keep you from getting your point across.
- Plan the encounter carefully.
- Pick a location where you can leave easily.
- Don’t sack someone on their birthday.
- Be honest when telling why they were fired.
- Explain what will happen now. Answer all questions about the effective date, how other employees will be told, etc.
- Suggest what the sacked employee could do next, such as another line of work, or further training.
