Hot Management Tips ...
High Expectations ...
The strongest factor in how much an employee does is often how much the boss expects of him. So it pays to create an impression that you expect a lot. It can make a dramatic boost to productivity. However, there are traps for young players in this technique.
- Expecting good results cannot overcome lack of training, yet this management method tends to look so much on the bright side it forgets items like training.
- It can have psychologically strange results on a manager, if an employee does better than expected. Managers can become highly dissatisfied.
- Setting an expectation for an employee can override a rational appraisal of what the employee should be doing. So the employee may achieve a lot, but those achievement may be the wrong things.
- Management may become so convinced that its expectations will be achieved, it does not put enough time into supervision. When an employee is not achieving, it takes longer to detect.
Despite the problems, management by expectancy is one of the best motivation techniques available.
