Authority Erosion ...
It often happens that managers unwittingly erode the authority of their executives. Many bosses seem to resent the vert leaders that they have set up. They take pains to show the workers that they are really the “biggest” boss. This causes a lot of discontent at all levels of employment. It often results in lowered production and staff turnover. Watch out:
- if you tolerate workers who argue about leader’s right to lead. However, questioning his judgment on individual decisions may be acceptable.
- if you give orders which by-pass the leader.
- when an employee has to seek authority from someone other than his direct superior.
- whenever problems that the leader should have solved are referred to the boss.
- when the leader’s orders are countermanded from above.
- when the boss criticises a worker for something the leader has praised (or when the boss praises, following a criticism).
- when blame or credit by-passes the leader directly to an individual within the group. Ultimately the blame or credit should go to the group leader and it is up to him to single out the individual in his group. Even when this is done publicly, it is only a token. The real responsibility belongs with leadership.
