The middle-market is disappearing. High priced goods sell and so do cheap goods, but not the in-betweens. Actually, there are two separate markets, and two different strategies are needed. For low-margin customers, personal selling is too expensive. Use phone calls to get repeat customers, and direct mail and computerisation for predictable replacement orders. High-margin strategy must be based on value, not price. Work closely with the customer to find out exactly what is needed.
